Planit was engaged to investigate and provide engineering designs to prevent stormwater runoff affecting buildings at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds Campus. The scope of works called for temporary measures that could be installed in a short timeframe at minimal cost, while longer term solutions were investigated.

During consecutive rainfalls, stormwater runoff rates exceeded the capacity of the drainage system, with flows affecting key buildings including a basement. In addition to building damage and the potential damage to sensitive equipment, the flooding created an unacceptable risk to students and staff. Costs incurred included clean up and replacement costs as well as down time during which the buildings could not be used.

Planit’s investigation found that the problem was caused by a combination of concentrated overland flow from a neighbouring property and the cumulative effect of new buildings, landscaping and changes to carpark layouts throughout the campus. Planit successfully designed and recommended flow diversion measures to redirect flow away from the sensitive sites and into areas where it would not cause any problems.
