Overview
The Sandhills Wetlands project has officially opened to the public, transforming a historically degraded site in the heart of Byron Bay into a functioning wetland system that improves water quality, strengthens flood resilience and restores native habitat.
Located behind Lawson and Massinger Streets, the project delivers lasting environmental, cultural and community benefits while providing an accessible natural space for residents and visitors.
Planit Consulting has partnered with Byron Shire Council on the planning, design and delivery of the Sandhills Wetlands since 2020, providing integrated multidisciplinary services across all stages of the project.
Project Background
The site was originally a natural wetland but was extensively sand mined in the 1960s, resulting in the loss of ecological function. Byron Shire Council identified the opportunity to restore the area to support biodiversity, improve downstream water quality and strengthen flood resilience within the Byron Bay township.
The restored wetlands treat stormwater before it flows toward Clarkes Beach, increase flood storage capacity and re-establish habitat for local fauna. A network of paths, boardwalks and seating allows the community to safely access and engage with the wetland environment.
Our Role
Planit delivered integrated services from early planning through to construction completion, including:
- Project Management
- Environmental Impact Statement preparation, public exhibition and approval
- Biodiversity Development Assessment Report
- Civil and stormwater design management, including wetland treatment zones and access upgrades
- Detailed design and coordination of a new sewer main
- Construction and tender documentation
- Traffic and pedestrian access planning
- Superintendent Representative and Construction Management services during construction
Key Features
The completed wetland system includes:
- Three constructed wetland ponds with permanent open water and macrophyte planting
- Formal and informal walking paths, including boardwalks through low-lying areas
- Extensive native revegetation to support habitat restoration
- Stormwater treatment zones improving water quality before discharge to Clarkes Beach
- Bespoke seating, landscaping and public lighting
- A shared path connection between Cowper Street and Massinger Street
- Careful design around the 4-metre-deep sewer line traversing the site
Approximately 15,000 cubic metres of material was excavated and reused or managed in accordance with environmental requirements.
Cultural Partnership
The project was guided by Connecting with Country principles and developed in consultation with Arakwal representatives, the Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council and Crown Lands.
The site forms part of an Aboriginal Land Agreement within the Sandhills Reserve and holds strong cultural significance. This collaboration ensured the restored wetland reflects cultural values while delivering meaningful environmental outcomes.
Outcomes
The Sandhills Wetlands now delivers:
- Improved stormwater quality entering the coastal environment
- Increased flood resilience for the surrounding precinct
- Restored habitat and enhanced biodiversity
- A safe, accessible public space for the community
- Cultural recognition and opportunities for education
Planit Consulting is proud to support Byron Shire Council in delivering this important environmental asset for Byron Bay.
