Building Resilience: Reconnecting Communities After Disaster

Across the Northern Rivers, recovery has become about more than rebuilding what was lost; it’s about designing for what comes next.

In the years since the 2022 flood events, councils across the region have been faced with the complex task of repairing damaged infrastructure while preparing for the future. It’s not just about fixing culverts and clearing drains; it’s about creating networks that are stronger, safer, and more resilient to the next major event.

When disaster strikes, the first response is immediate: restore access, repair what’s broken, reconnect communities. But once the dust settles, the challenge shifts to long-term resilience and how to design and build infrastructure that will hold up under changing conditions.

Projects like Kyogle’s Landslip Recovery Program, the Whian Whian Road Culvert Replacement, and the East Town Drains refurbishment have shown what this evolution looks like in practice. Each one demanded careful coordination between planning, design, environmental management, and on-site construction support.

Recovery programs of this scale rely on collaboration. Councils, consultants, and contractors have worked side by side to assess risks, design safe solutions, and deliver works that meet funding and community expectations.

For Planit, the focus has been on being flexible and responsive, providing the right people and expertise as needs evolve. From detailed civil design and project management to environmental assessment and construction management, our teams have adapted to the region’s dynamic recovery landscape.

Every restored causeway, reinforced slope, and cleared channel contributes to the bigger picture of communities that can withstand future events and reconnect faster when disruption comes.

The lessons from these projects continue to shape how we approach regional infrastructure. Building resilience is not a one-off task; it is an ongoing process of designing with foresight, working collaboratively, and learning from each project.

Planit is proud to have supported councils across the Northern Rivers in their recovery and resilience programs, including Ballina Shire Council, Tweed Shire Council, Byron Shire Council, Lismore City Council and Kyogle Council. We are passionate about helping communities rebuild stronger and stay connected for the long term.
