Sandhills Wetlands Opens as a New Environmental and Community Asset for Byron Bay

The Sandhills Wetlands project in Byron Bay has officially opened to the public, marking the completion of a long-term environmental restoration project in the heart of the township.

What was once a disturbed landscape affected by sand mining in the 1960s is now a functioning wetland system that improves water quality, strengthens flood resilience and provides a welcoming natural space for the community to enjoy.

Planit Consulting has partnered with Byron Shire Council on the project since 2020, supporting the environmental planning, design and construction phases from concept through to delivery. Located behind Lawson and Massinger Streets, the wetlands represent a rare opportunity to restore a natural ecosystem within an urban setting.

From the outset, the project was shaped by Connecting with Country principles and developed in consultation with Arakwal representatives, the Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council and Crown Lands. The site forms part of an Aboriginal Land Agreement and holds strong cultural significance. Ongoing collaboration ensured the restored landscape reflects cultural values while supporting long-term environmental health and community access.

The completed wetland system treats stormwater before it reaches Clarkes Beach, using open water ponds and macrophyte planting zones to naturally filter nutrients and sediments. The wetlands also provide additional flood storage capacity during major rainfall events, contributing to improved flood resilience for the surrounding area.

Native vegetation planted throughout the site will continue to establish over time, enhancing habitat and supporting a healthy, diverse ecosystem. New paths, boardwalks and seating areas allow residents and visitors to engage with the landscape while protecting sensitive ecological areas.
Planit worked closely with Byron Shire Council across all phases of the project, providing project management services, environmental assessments (including EIS and BDAR), civil and stormwater design management, construction documentation and tender support, access planning and superintendent representative services. This integrated approach supported environmental compliance and helped maintain design intent through delivery.

The official opening brought together representatives from Federal, State and Local Government, the Reconstruction Authority and Byron Shire Council’s leadership team, highlighting the importance of the project to the Byron Bay community and the wider region.

Planit is proud to have contributed to a restoration project that will provide lasting environmental, cultural and community benefit.
